A Licensed Mental Health Counselor Bringing Mindfulness to MC
Nicol Zambrano, a licensed mental health counselor and assistant director at the counseling center, recognized the transformative power of mindfulness after completing an eight-week MBSR course. Motivated to share its benefits, she pursued certification as a MIEA Certified Mindfulness instructor, bringing the program to Manhattan College. Leading the classes, Zambrano creates a supportive environment where students can embrace mindfulness and discover new ways to cope with stress.
Empowering Students in Times of Uncertainty
During the pandemic, the need for effective stress management techniques has been particularly pronounced. The mindfulness skills taught in MIEA’s curriculum provide students with a sense of control over their well-being and emotions, even amidst circumstances beyond their control. By practicing mindfulness, students can experience stress reduction, improved sleep, enhanced focus, and heightened self-awareness—essential tools for navigating the uncertainties of the pandemic.
Personal Testimonies: Unleashing Resilience in Challenging Times
Cal Lepkowski, a sophomore communications major, and Zachary Olivan, an exercise science major, have both found solace and empowerment through MIEA’s curriculum. Lepkowski, also a resident assistant, attests to the power of remaining calm and grounded in the face of stress, while Olivan emphasizes how mindfulness has shifted his perspective and equipped him with a positive outlook. Both students credit MIEA for their enhanced resilience and personal growth.
After taking this class, I have more of an awareness of who I am as a person. I’m more grounded in my approach to life. I have a more positive outlook.
Mindfulness has changed my life and I look forward to practicing every day.

Adapting to Virtual Learning
While the transition from in-person to online classes due to the pandemic presented its challenges, MIEA successfully transitioned to a virtual format. Nicol Zambrano assures that the class structure remains intact, and virtual sessions provide convenience and accessibility. Though acknowledging the limitations of online interactions, students like Lepkowski appreciate the ability to practice mindfulness in a familiar and comfortable environment, while Olivan acknowledges the unique benefits of in-person connection during certain meditation techniques.
Expanding the Reach of MIEA
MIEA is a versatile program that can benefit students from various backgrounds. Olivan, the manager of the baseball team, believes that every student, particularly athletes, can benefit from participating in the mindfulness classes. He plans to introduce mindfulness to the baseball players at Manhattan College, highlighting the relevance and applicability of MIEA beyond the classroom.
Spring Semester Classes and Counseling Center Resources
Manhattan College offers MIEA classes throughout the Spring semester, providing students with a structured and supportive environment to cultivate mindfulness skills. Additionally, the counseling center at MC offers a range of resources and programs to address students’ concerns, with specialized support available for pandemic-related issues. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these services and seek help when needed.

The Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults has emerged as a powerful tool for Manhattan College students to cope with stress during the pandemic. By integrating mindfulness into their lives, students can develop resilience, enhance well-being, and navigate the challenges of the current times with greater ease. With the support of dedicated instructors and the resources provided by the counseling center, students can embrace mindfulness and unlock their potential for personal growth and emotional well-being.
