MIEA at BridgeValley Community & Technical College
Bringing Mindfulness to Nursing Students
Carla Blankenbuehler and Jennifer Hurt’s experience with the Mindfulness Institute reflects a powerful testament to the impact of mindfulness education designed specifically for college students.
Designed for College Students
Carla Blankenbuehler, Director of Counseling Services & Dean of Students, and Jennifer Hurt, Director of Nursing Retention, both at BridgeValley Community & Technical College, deeply connected with MIEA’s approach of a mindfulness program tailored to address the unique challenges college students face.
Carla Blankenbuehler reflects: “We really appreciate your program because it is designed specifically for college students. It’s very specific to this group and the unique challenges they face. Another piece of the program we enjoy is there are so many skill sets and meditations that we can teach the students. There’s not a one size fits all. So the students are more successful because they can decide what resonates with them, what they enjoy, what works for their lifestyle.”
“Aha!” Moments
The journey with the Mindfulness Institute brought about several “aha moments.” The immediate responses from students, gathered through surveys, highlighted the program’s effectiveness. Insights from student feedback inspired Carla and Jennifer to become even better teachers.
Jennifer Hurt shares: “I think the moment I realized the program was working was through some of the immediate responses, which are from the surveys, seeing what our students were saying, what they were telling us, and the things we were reading, those were great responses. They helped us to be better teachers through this entire program.”
Long-Term Benefits
However, the true breakthrough came when they observed the long-term benefits unfolding.
Carla and Jennifer witnessed remarkable transformations among their students. Notably, students requested meditation to calm their nerves and center themselves before important exams. This demonstrated the lasting impact of mindfulness, as students took the initiative to incorporate these techniques into their academic lives.
In another example, a teacher initially unaware of the program encouraged her students to take a moment to breathe before an exam. The enthusiastic response from the students showcased the program’s positive influence on their stress management and focus.
In a challenging scenario where a MIEA student’s patient was experiencing mental health issues and agitated, the student applied the deep breathing techniques learned through the Mindfulness Institute. As a result, the patient calmed down, allowing for the successful administration of medication.
For Carla, this was a profound “aha” moment. Witnessing a student not only benefiting from mindfulness personally but also passing on these valuable techniques to make a positive impact on others was a testament to the program’s efficacy.
Impact and Growth
The results of their journey have been remarkable. BridgeValley Community & Technical College has seen rising retention rates and an overall improvement in student success since introducing MIEA’s curriculum to its students.
Students have started utilizing resources more frequently, reflecting a growing awareness of the program’s effectiveness. The word is spreading about the positive changes brought about by mindfulness.
Buoyed by their successes, Carla and Jennifer have ambitious plans for the future. They aim to expand the program into other departments, including dental hygiene, LPN, paramedic, and medical lab technician programs. The impact of the Mindfulness Institute’s program continues to resonate and grow.
